Jan Coulter Furniture Maker is a small, independently owned woodworking shop that has been in business since 1990. Jan specializes in quality hardwood furniture inspired by the British Arts & Crafts Movement started by William Morris at the end of the 19th century.
You won’t find plywood or any of the short cuts that are so common in mass-produced furniture. Instead, each piece is built one at a time, with attention to details that reflect the work of an artist committed to her craft. Here are some examples:
- Careful selection of wood to highlight beautiful grain and figure.
- Frequent use of ‘live edges’, giving each piece a unique character.
- Dovetailed drawers with solid wood floating panels on drawer bottoms.
- Mortise and tenon joinery and sturdy construction.
- Solid wood backs on all casework.
- Glass panels individually splined.
- Built with an understanding of the properties of wood, designed for changes in the seasons.
- Thorough, hand polished finish work inside and out that is functional and feels good to the touch.
- Time-honoured designs adapted to contemporary living.
